Frequently Asked Questions

Q

1. Who is contacted if I call for help?

A

Sense6 Design has a private security service trained to handle requests coming from Artemis devices. Think of them as your personal security advocate who can work with fire, medical and police on your behalf. They receive your profile, location and a live-stream of anything you say. The security operator uses your location and what you say to determine where you are and which fire, medical or police services to send to you. Artemis can also contact up to three loved-ones via SMS and tell them your location at the same time. That’s several people, instantly aware that you are in trouble, which is more than what happens in most assaults.

Q

2. How do I report an emergency using Artemis and ensure I get help?

A

Just press the button on the Artemis Module three times times fast to report an emergency. Please only trigger Artemis if you genuinely feel concerned for your safety or the safety of someone else. You will feel the jewelry buzz three times to confirm that an emergency request has been received. The security operator only has your location, motion data showing if you fall down, and whatever they hear you say. For your own safety, Artemis doesn’t make any noise, so you won’t hear the operator’s voice. It is important that you verbally provide as much detail as you can after you feel the buzz – the operator is listening and wants guidance on what do for you. The audio is also recorded and could be used as evidence in a criminal investigation later.

Q

3. What if it goes off by accident? Can I cancel a request?

A

We have designed Artemis to be very hard to trigger by accident. It will buzz three times to let you know that it has received a request and sends a push notification to your smartphone.  If you do need to cancel a request you can do it from your smartphone app.

Q

4. Can people tell that I’m wearing Artemis?

A

Not unless you tell them. Artemis hides behind fashionable jewelry and is there if you need it. The Artemis module will be compatible with a range of jewelry styles so it will be very hard to spot from the front. Your friends won’t see it unless you tell them and it’s your choice whether to tell an attacker that their voice has been recorded and that the police have already been called. You can also wear an Artemis-compatible necklace under you shirt/jacket so that it is not visible, but it can still be activated.

Q

5. What safety situations is Artemis useful for?

A

Artemis can be used in any emergency, but it is particularly suited for the following situations:  Muggings, stranger rape, date rape (much more common), kidnapping, assaults, harrassment.  It is also useful for feeling safer when walking down dark streets, walking to your car, taking public transit, or walking through bad areas of town. Artemis can also be used for medical emergencies and reporting emergencies for other people such as noticing a fire in a neighbor’s apartment. You should still exercise appropriate caution and common sense while wearing Artemis, but is does provide an extra layer of safety and security.

Q

6. Can I buy Artemis for my daughter, girlfriend, or wife?

A

Absolutely. If you worry about your significant other traveling alone, Artemis is a great way to stay more connected, know your loved one can instantly access official safety resources, and be assured you can find them if they get in trouble. Please note that Artemis is a personal device and is assigned to one person once it is activated.

Q

7. Can I let my friend or family member borrow my Artemis when I’m not using it?

A

No, the Artemis is your personal protection. It forms a bond with you from the moment you meet and it is personalized to your needs. If someone else called for help using your Artemis, then the police would go looking for the wrong person.

Q

8. Why can’t I just use my cell phone to dial 911?

A

Talking on your phone, or carrying your phone in your hand at night makes you a more visible target, reduces your ability to fend off an attack, and makes you less aware of your surroundings. When your phone is in your backpack or purse it can take upwards of a minute to find your phone and dial 911. Most assaults are a surprise, often happen from behind, and occur in just a few seconds. A functional safety device needs to be dedicated to only safety, be worn on your body when you need it, and work automatically for you in under a second. Artemis is an additional layer of safety on top of your phone, and you are always welcome to dial 911 if it is useful for your situation.

Q

9. Is Artemis rechargeable?

A

Yes, just charge your Artemis jewelry once every two weeks. Artemis will use a wireless method which will provide an almost effortless charging experience similar to hanging up your jewelry at night. Your phone will alert you in advance if the Artemis battery is getting low so that you are never left with an inactive Artemis when you most need it. This means that you do not need to buy a new product when your battery runs low, unlike other products.

Q

10. Why is there a subscription plan?

A

Artemis requires an affordable monthly subscription (less than many other security options) to pay for the security operators, other internal security services, and so that we don’t have to charge you a large fee for accidental false-alarms like other companies do. We will also use these funds to continue to enhance Artemis and wirelessly update it with new security features over time. Please see our Indiegogo campaign page for more details on our plans.

Q

11. What if my phone is stolen or I’m out of range of my phone?

A

If your purse or backpack is grabbed with your phone in it, trigger Artemis immediately. If you are within 100 ft of your phone a request will be sent to our security operators and the location of your phone will be tracked by police. Similarly, if you are in one room of a house, and your purse is in another room, Artemis will typically be able to send a message out.

Q

12. Does Artemis make any noise?

A

Nope. Just like real jewelry, Artemis doesn’t make a peep. This means you won’t have any embarrassing alarms going off during dinner parties. However, Artemis can listen to what is going on if you ask for help. You can also optionally have your phone give an audio alert if it receives a request for help.

Q

13. Is Artemis just for women?

A

No, violence can happen to anyone. Statistically women are more at risk for some kinds of crime and are also more interested in jewelry, so we’re starting with that market. However, we plan to produce a unisex design option in the near future so that men can feel safer too. Mean are also welcome to purchase the current model if they wish. It’s not just about being confident, it’s about knowing that you have a backup plan, and people who can support you if you need it. Anyone can get in a tight spot.

Q

14. What phones are compatible?

A

iPhone and Android devices that support Bluetooth 4.0 and have a data plan are compatible. Artemis uses Bluetooth low-energy to stay connected with your phone and make emergency requests for you. Please see our Indiegogo Campaign Requirements section for more details on Android support. Android has historically offered poor quality bluetooth support and this may delay our implementation of it.

Q

15. Is Artemis appropriate for my child or elderly parent?

A

Artemis is specifically designed for active fashionable adults aged 16-70. It depends on the particular needs of the user, but there are products from other companies which specifically address the needs of children and less-active seniors. There are significant differences in terms of privacy, durability, technical ability and features for different age groups. We recommend FilipLifeAlert and SmartStones as possible alternatives.

Q

16. Is Artemis going to be available in bracelets / earrings / rings?

A

We are starting with necklace and bracelet form factors and will rapidly be expanding into other forms of jewelry. We do feel that it is important that Artemis be attached to your body (not attached to your bag) for safety reasons.

Q

17. Can Artemis prevent crimes from happening?

A

Due to its discrete design, Artemis is more of an instant-reactionary measure instead of a preventative measure. We recommend carrying mace in addition to Artemis if you want an extra layer of protection. You also have the option of telling an attacker that police have already been called to your location and that your conversation is being recorded, which may deter some attackers. We are looking at adding more preventative measures in the future. If you have ideas for us please let us know.

Q

18. Where does Artemis work? Does it work outside the USA?

A

If your smartphone has a data connection (e.g. GPRS, LTE, WIFI) then Artemis can send an emergency request. If it can’t get a data connection it will revert to using SMS if any cellular connection is available. Artemis will work while traveling within the US. You do need to keep your phone charged for emergency communications to be sent. (We recommend purchasing an external phone charger to keep your phone topped up if it gets low.)
INTERNATIONAL USERS:
Please see the Requirements > International section of our Indiegogo page for details on limited functionality (for now). We do plan to make this an international device usable by anyone and supporting international travel in the future if possible.

Q

19. Is Artemis waterproof?

A

It is “shower-proof”. You can take a shower or get sweaty with Artemis but you can’t go scuba diving or take a bath. We want you to be able to wear it anywhere you would normally wear jewelry. Full water-proofness is on our roadmap for the future.

Q

20. How do I put the Artemis Module in other pieces of jewelry?

A

Just pop the Artemis Module into the back of any Artemis-compatible jewelry. A magnet attaches it securely so you won’t have to worry about losing it. Any time you are doing an activity that requires a different style of jewelry just pop it into whatever you feel comfortable in.

Q

21. Will wearing Artemis make me feel scared more?

A

Everyone is different, but we like to think of Artemis as a tool for personal empowerment. We all need to take some risks on a daily basis to commute to work, go on a date, or travel for a business trip. The chance of running into a problem may be low, but knowing you have a backup plan if things go wrong can inspire confidence. In some areas, dealing with sketchy people, harrassment and street crime is unfortunately a daily occurrence. Why wouldn’t you want an extra layer of security? Women we have talked with have also mentioned the analogy: “If it’s raining outside, would you take an umbrella with you?”

Q

22. I have allergies. What is your product made of?

A

Our product will not contain nickel. We will be using high-quality materials and will make models in various metals so that there are options for people with allergies to particular metals. All external metals will be listed in the product description so please ensure that you don’t have a known allergic reaction to that model (e.g. to Sterling Silver or White Gold, etc.) If it does bother you just send it back and we’ll exchange it for a model with a different metal.

Q

23. Will Artemis work if I don’t have an active subscription plan?

A

Artemis will process emergency requests without a subscription, but reverts to only email-based alerts to friends. (Also see Requirements > Subscription section in our Indiegogo campaign).

Q

24. Will Artemis produce more ‘false-alarms’ for Police and 911?

A

No, because it goes to our private security operations center first. Security companies have a reputation to uphold and they are used to determining whether calls are real emergencies or false alarms based on very subtle data. After confirming that the emergency is real and what type of emergency services are needed, the security operator uses a database to determine which services have jurisdiction over the area you are currently in. The government agency which they call treats calls from security companies differently than from individuals because of established relationships and pre-validation of reports. It is also worth noting that 911 centers are typically analog (not digital) and purposefully cut off Internet access in their operations centers. 911 also do not accept forensic data (e.g. accelerometer data for if you fall down, or digital audio recordings), which our service does. Artemis is the next generation of emergency alert system.

Having instant emergency-alert-services may theoretically increase the number of events reported, but we think that is a natural part of making crimes easier to report, and government agencies should scale to deal with the amount of actual crimes in their jurisdictions. We are also looking at other types of private security response. If you have ideas let us know.

Q

25. Are there any other features you have planned?

A

We have plans for a range of security features which will be compatible with existing Artemis hardware and added to your jewelry via software updates. We want to bring sci-fi to personal safety. Have any ideas for us?

Q

26. I own a security company in a country outside the US. We would like to provide security services for Artemis.

A

We are interested. Please contact us.

Q

27. I am interested in investing in your company.

A

We are interested. Please contact us.

Q

28. Does Artemis make me safer?

A

Safety is a complex issue. No technology, behavior or skill will make you 100% safe, and an element of risk is a positive part of adventure, confidence-building and changing the world. If you were 100% protected, you would presumably live inside of a fortress and never be able to leave. What we are looking for is a balance point, where we are free to do most of the things we want to do, but also have a safety net in place for if things happen to go wrong. It isn’t about being scared to go outside, it’s about knowing that you have a chance of getting out of a bad situation. Currently we have amazingly few safeguards in place to resist surprise attacks. Frequently these attacks occur without the knowledge of anyone that could have helped, until long after they are over. There is frequently little objective evidence of what did occur, which makes the process of getting justice difficult. If we are to have a safer society in the long term, we need people who are considering committing crimes to know that they will not get away with it. Artemis takes a step in the right direction by giving independent people the option to have faster access to emergency resources and a way to easily record evidence of what is happening. Artemis is software-upgradeable and we look forward to adding more preventative and reactive features in the future.

Q

29. What happens to my contribution if the Indiegogo campaign doesn’t reach its funding goal of 200k by Dec. 12?

A

All of your contributions are automatically returned to you by Indiegogo if we don’t reach the campaign goal. This is a fixed-funding campaign. We don’t want to accept your money unless we have enough total funding to produce the product and ensure you are happy with it.

Q

30. How big is the Artemis pendant and module? Why does it look big in the pictures?

A

We have been developing a number of prototypes and jewelry designs. You may see a range of them in the different photo shoots and visuals. The version of the Artemis pendant being released on Indiegogo is slightly larger than a quarter and is smaller than the version shown in the video. We think you will find it to be a reasonable size. Please see the Indiegogo page for specific measurements.
